Happy Friday! What are you doing this weekend? If you’re in the New York City this Sunday, December 16th, take your notebook and head on over to AlleyNYC (500 7th Ave, 17th Floor). When you arrive, you’ll find fellow artists participating in an amazing project called Pledge a Sketch.

The concept is pretty straightforward: in one day, 100 artists will attempt to make 100 commissioned portraits each, for a $10 commission fee per-portrait. The anticipated $100,000 will be donated to two great causes:

1 - Art Square Times Square is an organization whose goal is to turn Times Square, the most visited tourist attraction in the world, into a public art exhibition for one month each year by way of billboards, installation art, and pop-up galleries. They intend to make their debut in 2013, and funds from this project will go towards the purchase of permits and installation costs (billboard space is being generously donated by philanthropic partners).

2 - NYFA Emergency Relief Fund has teamed with the Warhol, Rauschenberg and Lambent Foundations to raise money to assist artists who incurred losses and damages during Hurricane Sandy. 25 percent of each commission will go to this fund.

If you’re an artist in New York and you’re interested in participating, you can still join the team of artists who have already committed to participating. Sign up right here.

If you’re not lucky enough to be in the area, don’t worry: you can still commission a portrait and be a part of this event. Pre-order your portrait here.

Here’s a great video about the Times Square Art Square project that this event will be supporting:

Let us know if you choose to participate in this event in any way! We can't wait to see the great things that come from such a creative day.
